The operation of PON optical transceiver modules is based on fiber access technology, utilizing a passive optical network architecture. PON (Passive Optical Network) is a type of optical distribution (ODN) that operates without any active electronic devices between the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) and Optical Network Units (ONUs). OLT, which stands for Optical Line Terminal, is the central office equipment in the PON system. It connects the optical fiber backbone and serves as the equivalent of switches or routers in traditional communication networks. It acts as both the gateway to the external network and the entrance/exit point for the internal network. The main functions of the OLT include traffic scheduling, buffer control, and providing access to the passive optical fiber network interface and bandwidth allocation towards users. In simple terms, the OLT performs two primary functions: handling upstream access to the PON network and distributing received data to all ONU user terminals via the ODN network.

ONU, or Optical Network Unit, plays two roles: selectively receiving broadcasts sent by the OLT and providing selective responses if it needs to receive the data; collecting and buffering Ethernet data to be sent by users and transmitting it to the OLT according to the assigned transmission window. In FTTx networks, the deployment of ONUs can vary based on the scenario. For example, in FTTC (Fiber To The Curb), the ONU is located in the central equipment room of the neighborhood; in FTTB (Fiber To The Building), the ONU is placed in the junction box in the hallway; in FTTH (Fiber To The Home), the ONU is installed at the user's home.

ONT, or Optical Network Terminal, represents the very end unit in the FTTH network and is commonly referred to as an "optical modem," similar to an xDSL modem. ONT is the optical network terminal applied to the end user, while ONU represents the optical network unit, which may have other networks between it and the end user. The ONT is a component of the ONU.

The OLT serves as the management end, and the ONU is the terminal end. The activation of ONU services is carried out by the OLT, establishing a master-slave relationship between them.
