Why do third-party optical modules fail to work after switches are upgraded to a new firmware version?
Third-party optical modules can stop working after a switch firmware upgrade because the switch's software controls how modules are identified, validated, initialized, and configured. A firmware upgrade can change any of those steps, even when the physical module and fiber connections have not changed.

1. Transceiver identification or validation changes
Optical modules contain EEPROM data describing their vendor, part number, type, speed, and other characteristics. A firmware update can change how the switch reads or validates those fields. If the module is not recognized as supported, the switch may report Unsupported transceiver and keep the port down.
2. Vendor identity or EEPROM encoding
A compatible module may be programmed to report an part number, but matching the part number does not guarantee that all EEPROM fields or hardware behavior match the genuine module. Firmware may rely on additional identification information.
3. Port initialization or driver regression
New firmware can change low-level port drivers, module initialization, or the handling of module-specific settings. A software defect can therefore prevent a previously working module from being enabled.
4. Speed, FEC, or link-training differences
A module can be detected successfully but still fail to establish a link because of speed configuration, forward error correction (FEC), or interoperability differences. These are more likely when the module is recognized but the interface remains down, rather than when the switch explicitly rejects the module.
If service restoration is urgent, evaluate a supported rollback with the switches rather than immediately replacing all the cables or changing unsupported-transceiver settings.
